Prior to his arrival at Colby, Stokes coached at Trinity College and the University of Massachusetts. A 1990 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Stokes was a four-time winner of the Head of the Charles Regatta, a four-time U.S. National Champion, and a member of the men's lightweight eight on the 1993 United States Rowing Team.
Stokes and his wife, Bess, live in Oakland, Maine, with their daughters, Maggie and Sally.

Joe Richards, an assistant coach at the University of Southern California for three years before coming to Colby, enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Mules during the 2009-10 season.
Richards, a 2004 graduate of The George Washington University, worked with USC's varsity men's crew and later coached the Trojan freshman team. USC crews won medals at the Pacific 10 Championships and the San Diego Crew Classic during his three years. Richards' first job out of college was head coach of the novice girls at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va.
Richards was the most valuable rower for the George Washington's men's crew during his senior year and also was a captain. He was part of a varsity eight boat which won a gold medal at the Atlantic 10 Conference Rowing Championships in 2002 and a silver medal in the varsity four at the 2004 IRA National Championship Regatta. Richards also won a silver medal at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships and he raced in the Henley Royal Regatta in 2006.
Richards received his U.S. Rowing Level II certification in December 2004.
