Men's Ice Hockey—2007-08 Season Overview

2010-11 Season Outlook

The men's hockey team return the top seven scorers from last year's 11-9-4 team after a strange season a year ago.

Colby lost the first two games of the season, went on a 13-game unbeaten streak (10-0-3), and then went 1-6-1 in the final eight regular season games. The Mules were the eighth seed in the NESCAC tourney and nearly beat rival and top-seeded Bowdoin in a 2-1 overtime loss in the league playoffs. Colby had  beaten Bowdoin in back-to-back games during the regular season.

Senior captain Billy Crinnion is back after leading the team in scoring with 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points. He earned All-NESCAC honors a year ago.

Mike Doherty (8 goals, 17 assists), Nick Kondiles (10 goals, 11 assists), assistant captain Wil Hartigan (8 goals, 13 assists), assistant captain Dan Nelson (5 goals, 11 assists), Cory McGrath (2 goals, 12 assists), and Spike Smigelski (10 goals, 3 assists) were other leading scorers. Kondiles, McGrath, and Smigelski teamed up on an all first-year forward line and were very productive.

The Mules, under head coach Jim Tortorella, lost the most to graduation on defense. However, senior goalie Cody McKinney is back with 29 career wins and 1,739 saves.

2009-10 Season Outlook

The Colby College men’s hockey team may have had the youngest squad in the New England Small College Athletic Conference last year in going 6-15-3 after the graduation of one of the best senior classes in program history.

Head coach Jim Tortorella will have 10 of the team’s top 11 scorers returning, including leading scorer Mike Doherty (10 goals, 7 assists). Doherty was one of three first-year players among the top 11 scorers last season. Tortorella, who has a 207-118-27 career record at Colby heading into his 15th season, has 22 returning players on the roster.

Junior Billy Crinnion (6 goals, 9 assists) and first year Dan Nelson (6 goals, 9 assists) were tied for second in scoring, while junior Wil Hartigan (5 goals, 6 assists) and senior Jeoff Jarnot (1 goal, 10 assists) also return. Matt Strickland (2 goals, 8 assists), Chris Buonomo (5 goals, 4 assists), and Michael Belliveau (2 goals, 7 assists) are other key players back.

Strickland will be the captain while Jarnot and Belliveau will be assistant captains. Belliveau is the team’s leading active career scorer with 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points.

Karl Burns (1 goal, 4 assists) returns after playing in just 12 games last year and Matt Rappaport (4 goals, 1 assist) had the game-winning goal in a 1-0 home win over Bowdoin last year. Seniors Mike Policinski, Jared Crittenden, and Eric Simmons are back on the forward line.

Senior Mike White (2 goals, 5 assists) and sophomore Jesse Lehman (1 goal, 6 assists) are both back on defense. Tom McGinn, Patrick Bursee, Bobby Sullivan, and Tom Scott also return on defense for the Mules.

Colby’s three first-year players --- Nick Kondiles, Michael Smigelski, and Cory McGrath --- all are forwards and will look to add scoring punch.

Colby junior goaltender Cody McKinney has started 42 games in his first two years and has 1,135 career saves and a .910 save percentage. Jared Tepper, a senior, and junior James Lemonias will play behind McKinney.
