Jared Beers, a 2001 Colby College graduate, enters his fourth year as head coach of the Colby men's cross country/track and field programs in the 2009-10 academic year.

Beers has redesigned the strength and conditioning programs for all sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers.

Beers had been an assistant coach for the Colby indoor and outdoor track and field teams for three years before coming head coach. He was the sprints and hurdles coach, but also helped with recruiting and daily practices.

Beers held Colby's 400-meter record at one time during his collegiate career and still is part of the 1,600-meter relay team school record of 3:19.71. Beers, who captained the Mules during his junior and senior years, won numerous track and field titles during his collegiate career. He was the NESCAC champion in the 400 meters in his final year at Colby in 2001 and won the New England Division III title in the 400 on Colby's Alfond Track in 1999.

Beers, a native of Kittery, Maine, earned the track and field team's J. Seelye Bixler Award for the senior who contributes the most to track and field at Colby.

Assistant Coaches

Deb Aitken, Colby's head women's coach in her 25th season, coaches the men's and women's horizontal jumpers. She also works with middle distance and distance runners and multi-event athletes. Aitken is a past winner of the NESCAC Coach of the Year for track and field and for cross country.

Casey Kelley, who was an all-conference athlete at Bowdoin College, enters her second season as assistant coach for men's and women's track and field. Kelley received her bachelor's degree from Bowdoin in 2002 and earned a master's degree from Stanford University in 2007. She was an admissions officer at Stanford during the 2007-08 academic year and was the sole recruiter and diversity officer for Stanford's graduate programs. Kelley, a native of Cherryfield, Maine, still holds school records for Bowdoin in the indoor (36-9.5) and outdoor triple jump (38-10). She won the ECAC title in the triple jump in 2001 and earned All-NESCAC and all-state honors in all four years. Kelley was a team captain her senior year, earned Bowdoin track and field Most Valuable Athlete honors in 2001 and 2002, and also earned NESCAC All-Academic honors.Kelley was the Maine high school champion in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump at Narraguagus High School. Kelley was a track and field coach at Gardiner Area High School for one year. While a student at Stanford, she coached the horizontal jumpers at Silicon Valley High School. Kelley earned her USA Track and Field Level 1 coaching certification at UC-Berkeley in 2006.

Amy Bernatchez joined the staff in 2007 and serves as the shot put and javelin coach. Bernatchez was a collegiate heptathlete and has experience in many events. Bernatchez also is Colby’s head field hockey coach and serves as a personal trainer for faculty and staff.

Dan Camann has coached Colby's men's and women's hammer and discus throwers for 20 years. Colby's throwers have earned great respect in the New England region for their consistent success, which includes eight All-America honors.

Jose "Eric" Garcia, a collegiate 400-meter runner, joined the staff in 2006 as sprint coach. Garcia brings several years of track coaching experience, knowledge, and great enthusiasm. He also serves as an assistant football coach in the fall.

Gene Roy joined the staff in 2006 as pole vault coach. Roy has made a great impact on Colby vaulters, seeing great improvement and consistency. He has coached area pole vaulters for more than 20 years.
