Men's lacrosse drops NESCAC quarterfinal game (04/28/2012)

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Colby College men's lacrosse team held a 4-3 lead early in the second half only to see Connecticut College go on a 7-0 scoring run to pull out an 11-6 win in a NESCAC quarterfinal game Saturday.

The Camels improve their record to 10-5 with their fifth straight win. They will visit top-seeded Tufts University on Saturday for a semifinal contest. Colby College slipped to 9-5 with the setback.

Connecticut College senior net-minder Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) stopped 13 shots to lead the Camels.

Junior midfielder Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) had three goals and one assist for the winning side. Classmates Andrew Freedman (Sudbury, Mass.) and John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) both recorded hat-tricks in the victory for the Camels. Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) dished out a game-high four assists for the hosts.

Colby College junior attackman John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) had three goals in the setback. Jonathan McIvor (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Mules.

Face-off specialist Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington, Minn.) won 15-of-20 battles in the trenches and finished with a game-high eight ground balls for Colby. Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) made five saves in the contest for the visitors.

Trailing 4-3 in the early stages of the second half, Eicher supplied the equalizer when he executed a fake and deposited a low shot into the back of the cage with 10:15 remaining.

Later on in the third, the Camels took advantage of an unsettled situation. Brennan induced a turnover at the defensive end that was recovered by Clay Hillyer (South Windsor, Conn.). Hillyer pushed the ball ahead to Eicher, who assisted Kevin Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) for a goal that put the Camels on top for good at 5-4 with 4:41 remaining.

JR Hartgers (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) assisted Freedman for another Camel goal with 2:27 remaining and Eicher closed out the third period scoring with 17.3 seconds left to put the hosts on top 7-4.

Corcoran assisted on the first two scores of the fourth. With 10:52 remaining, Corcoran made a nifty looking feed from behind the cage to Lyons for a score. Then, with 7:27 to go, Corcoran was the facilitator on a Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.).

With 6:09 remaining in the contest, Freedman buried a one-timer with the pass coming from Hartgers to close out the 7-0 run and put the Camels in complete control with a 10-4 advantage.

However, Colby did not go away and the visitors scored twice in a 35 second span to make it interesting. Jennings scored his third goal of the day with 5:22 to go to make it a 10-6 contest.

But Moccia made four of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter and the Camels would not let the visitors get any closer. Eicher tacked on another score with 1:45 left to close out the 11-6 win.
