Doherty earns 50th career assist for men's hockey

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College senior Mike Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) had his 50th career assist and also scored, but the Mules fell 3-2 to Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference men's hockey Saturday at Alfond Rink.
 
Mike Moher (Toronto, Ontario) scored his second power play goal of the game with 7:54 left in the third period for the game-winning goal as seventh-ranked Amherst pulled out the victory.
 
Amherst moves to 9-2-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while the Mules fall to 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the league.
 
Moher helped the Lord Jeffs to a 2-0 lead after the first period. He scored at 14:14 on the power play and then teammate Mike Cashman (Abington, Mass.) tallied at 17:16.
 
Colby, which also lost 3-2 to Hamilton College on Friday and trailed 2-0 after one period in that game, battled back when Doherty scored his fourth goal of the season at 16:28 of the second period.
 
Doherty had his 50th career assist on Colby's tying goal by Cory McGrath (Yarmouthport, Mass.) at 6:15 of the third period.
 
The Mules were called for a cross-checking penalty at 11:12 of the third and Moher scored less than a minute later off a pass from Nick Brunette (Chaska, Minn.).
 
Nathan Corey (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 23 shots for the Lord Jeffs. Matt Delaney (Houston, Texas) made 20 saves for Colby.
