WATERVILLE, Maine --- Senior co-captain Scott Harff (Watertown, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist for the Colby College men's hockey team, but Williams College held off a strong Mule charge in the 28:41 of the contest for a 3-2 NESCAC win Saturday.
Williams goaltender Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) made 35 saves. Williams moves to 1-1 overall, while the Mules fall to 0-2.
Dougherty made 15 saves in the third period when Colby put the pressure on to get the tying goal. The Mules had cut the deficit to 3-2 with 8:41 left in the second period when Brendan Cosgrove (Exeter, N.H.) scored on the power play from co-captain Scott Harff (Watertown, N.Y.) and Tyler Lingel (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), who had his first collegiate point.
Williams, which was blanked 2-0 at Bowdoin College on Friday night, came out strong when Tucker Dayton (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied just 2:22 into the contest from Matt Doyle (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Peter Mistretta (New Canaan, Conn.).
The Mules tied the game at 1-1 about five minutes later when Harff scored his first goal of the season from fellow co-captain Cory McGrath (Yarmouthport, Mass.).
The Ephs took the lead for good at 12:19 of the opening period on Mistretta's goal off passes from John Wickman (Dallas, Texas) and Greg Johnson (Dallas, Texas).
Eric Rubino (Woodbridge, Ontario) made it a 3-1 game at 9:09 of the second period off assists from Wickman and Nick Anderson (Port Coquitlam, B.C.). The goal came less than a minute after Colby's Nate Morgan (Hamilton, Mass.) hit the post on a shot.
Jordan Nathan (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) made 23 saves for Colby.
