BRUNSWICK, Maine --- Four players scored their first collegiate goals and head coach Blaise MacDonald secured his first win with the Mules after the Colby College men's hockey team took a 6-1 win over Suffolk University on Saturday during the first day of the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic at Bowdoin College.
The Mules (1-3 overall) will play host to Salve Regina at 4 p.m. Sunday on the second day of the event. Bowdoin will play Suffolk (3-3-1) at Alfond Rink at 1 p.m. The Polar Bears and Salve Regina play on Saturday night.
Tyler Lingel, Matt Gelnaw, Jonathan Sdao, and Robert McCormick all had their first collegiate goals for Colby. Nick Lanza and Spike Smigelski also tallied for the winners.
The Mules actually trailed 1-0 when Suffolk's Steve Drago notched his third goal of the season, putting in a rebound in front at 5:05 of the first period.
Colby responded just 25 seconds later when Lingel finished off a scrum in front of the net off assists from Lanza and Cory McGrath.
The Mules had a 15-7 shot advantage in the opening 20 minutes and added three more goals after Lingel tallied. Gelnaw had a put-back at 7:50 off an assist from Ben Chwick. Lanza scored on the power play at 17:17 from McGrath and Scott Harff for a 3-1 lead. Smigelski then went top-shelf from Chwick and Gelnaw with only eight seconds left to intermission.
Sdao put the Mules up 5-1 at 2:16 of the third period off passes from Smigelski and Gelnaw. McCormick closed out the scoring at 17:35 from Smigelski and Brendon Bourgea.
Colby's Matt Delaney made 14 of his 28 saves in the scoreless second period.
McGrath reached 25 assists for his career and has 13 goals to lead all current Colby players in career scoring with 38 points. Smigelski moved within one goal of 25 for his career and has 12 assists for 36 points.
