The Mules are 3-0 overall heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. game at fourth-ranked Tufts University, the top team in New England. Gordon drops to 3-2 overall.
Colby appeared headed for a blowout win after taking a 6-0 lead, with two goals apiece from Derek Youngman and Austin Sayre during the run. Alex Rutan and Jeff Vaz had the other goals.
Rutan scored 34 seconds into the game to set the early tone. Sayre tallied from Buddy Reed with 12:34 left and Youngman tallied unassisted with 11:30 remaining and the Mules led 3-0 after less than four minutes.
Sayre added his second goal off a pass from Grimaldi with 7:42 to go, Vaz had a nice run to the goal and a blast for a 5-0 margin, and Youngman got his second goal from Ian Boldt.
The Fighting Scots cut the margin to 6-1 on a man-up goal by Ryan Utz, but Sayre scored his third of the period with 1:41 left and Grimaldi tallied with 0.2 seconds to go and it was 8-1.
Jake Martin had three goals for the Fighting Scots in the second period to keep his team in the game. He scored off an assist from Matt Dantona with 8:32 left to halftime and then added another man-up goal with 6:03 remaining.
Rutan scored his second of the game with 4:41 left to make it 9-3, but Martin scored again from Michael Utz. Youngman scored his third of the half just 15 seconds after Martin's goal and the Mules led 10-4 at the break.
Michael Utz cut the margin in half at 10-5 when he scored with 9:42 left in the third period. After a goal by Youngman 38 seconds later, Gordon scored the final two goals of the period to trail just 11-7. Ryan Utz had an unassisted goal and Martin tallied from Jordan Heckelmann.
Rutan, who had two big fourth quarter goals against Hamilton College on Saturday, had another one Tuesday. He tallied with 13:38 left off an assist from Grimaldi to push the lead back to five at 12-7.
The goal was important because Gordon scored two in a row to make it 12-9 with 7:39 to play. Michael Utz had an unassisted goal with 11:10 left and Ryan Utz put the Fighting Scots right in the game off an assist from Dantona with 7:39 left.
On a terrific individual effort, Colby's Brendan McNeill gave the Mules some breathing room with just 4:05 to play. He was outside and high on the left side, beat his defender on the run, and then made a nifty cut back move to the goal for the score.
Michael Utz got Gordon back to three goals with an unassisted score just 20 seconds after McNeill's goal. Neither team managed a goal the rest of the way.
Youngman finished with four goals to push his season numbers to 12 goals and three assists for a team-best 15 points. Rutan and Sayre both had three goals, Grimaldi had one goal and two assists, and Reed had two assists.
Jake Martin finished with four goals, while Ryan Utz and Michael Utz both had three goals and one assist for Gordon.
Both goalies had fine games, with Colby's Tyler Will stopping 12 shots and Fighting Scot keeper Cody Greenwald making 18 stops.
Peter Willauer had six ground balls and caused two turnovers for Colby's defense. Youngman added a game-high three caused turnovers and had four ground balls. Austin Frank had a terrific face-off day at 8-for-9 and had three ground balls.
Peter Kovacevic had five ground balls and won 10 face-offs for Gordon. William Brown had two caused turnovers.
