WATERVILLE, Maine --- Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished with 10 points on the day with seven goals and three assists in Colby College's 19-11 non-conference men's lacrosse win over New England College on Tuesday in the rain at Bill Alfond Field.
Colby, ranked seventh in New England, moves to 2-0 overall heading into Saturday's noon game at Hamilton College. The Pilgrims drop to 1-2 overall and will meet Rensselaer on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alexandria, Va.
Deveau just missed tying Colby's record for most goals in a game. Joel Castleman had eight goals against Plymouth State back in 1981. He also holds the single-game points record with 13 in that victory over Plymouth State.
Deveau reached 140 career points with his big day, moving his totals to 73 goals and 67 assists just two games into his senior season. Deveau leads the Mules in scoring with 10 goals and three assists in two games.
Colby senior attacker John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored five goals for the second straight game and also has 10 goals in two starts. He moved his career totals to 98 goals and nine assists for 107 points.
Garth Franklin (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Keith Fairbrother (Madison, N.J.) each added two goals for the Mules, while Chip Grossman (Charlottesville, Va.) had one goal and three assists. James Wyse (Newton, Mass.) had one goal and two assists and Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) added twp assists. Kris Molinaro (Redding, Conn.) had his first collegiate goal for the Mules.
Colby's Buddy Reed (Woolwich, Maine) had a fine all-around game with a pair of assists, seven ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Face-off man Eric Eberhart (Rye Beach, N.H.), playing in the place of injured Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington, Minn.), won 23 of his 34 face-off attempts and had a game-high eight ground balls. Peter Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers and teammate Russ Wilson (Denver, Colo.) had four ground balls.
Tim Reilly (Hanover, Mass.) led the Pilgrims with three goals and two assists, while Pat Miles (Brampton, Ontario) added two goals and one assist. Matt Goyette (Lowell, Mass.) finished with one goal and two assists and teammate Brian Gillis (N. Vancouver, B.C.) had one goal and one assist. Chris Collins (Murrieta, Calif.), Chris Surette (Lynn, Mass.), Adam Shute (Calgary, Alberta), and Koda-Wataka Robinson (Camas, Wash.) all had one goal.
Colby, for the second straight game, started off strong and led 3-0 just 4:16 into the contest on two goals by Deveau and one from Jennings. Fairbrother had two goals while Wyse and Deveau scored once over the next 10:44 to put the Mules up 7-0 after one quarter.
NEC scored three of the next four goals to start the second quarter. Collins and Gillis tallied to make it 7-2, but Grossman scored for the Mules with 8:18 to play to intermission. Miles made it 8-3 with 6:37 to go only to see Deveau and Jennings both score in the final 3:32 for a 10-3 lead at the break.
The Pilgrims fought hard in the third quarter and won the period by a 4-3 margin. Reilly cut the margin to 12-7 before Deveau scored his sixth goal of the game with 23 seconds to play.
NEC got as close as four goals on two occasions in the final quarter. Reilly and Miles scored two goals in 22 seconds to make the score 13-9 with 12:22 to play. The Mules, though, put the lead back up to six on goals by Jennings and Franklin. The Pilgrims again cut the lead to four at 15-11 on back-to-back goals by Surette and Goyette, but the Mules scored four goals in the final 3:23 to seal the victory.
