Grimaldi, Frank lead men's lacrosse past UNE

WATERVILLE, Maine --- John Grimaldi had nine points on the day and Austin Frank won 23 face-offs and scooped 20 ground balls to lead the Colby College men's lacrosse team to a 23-12 non-conference win over University of New England on Tuesday at Bill Alfond Field.

Grimaldi finished with five goals and four assists, while teammate Derek Youngman added four goals and three assists. Frank was 23-for-26 in face-offs and added two goals directly off wins.

Colby pounded 67 shots on goal and led 17-4 at halftime. Grimaldi and Youngman both had four goals and three assists in the opening half.

Austin Sayre and Jeff Vaz each had three goals for Colby, Connor MacLaverty added two goals and two assists, and Mark Philipps scored two goals.

Patrick Wolfe led University of New England with four goals and two assists. Nick Gross and Geoff Bruno both had two goals and one assist, while Mike Allan had two goals.

The Mules (5-4 overall) darted out to a 5-1 lead after Vaz scored unassisted on a long blast with 7:03 left in the first quarter. The Nor'easters, though, scored three of the next four goals to cut the margin to 7-4. Vaz tallied again with 1:39 remaining for an 8-4 lead after one.

Colby scored all 10 goals in the second quarter, the first with 12:57 left from Youngman. Frank had his face-off win goals just six and seven seconds after Mule goals.

With the score 19-5, UNE scored three straight goals to cut the margin to 19-8 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. Philipps and MacLaverty answered with goals in the final minute for a 21-8 lead.

The Nor'easters scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to get the margin to 10 goals at 21-11. The Mules had two of the final three goals.

Colby goalies Tyler Will, Dylan Rothenberg, Justin Waligory, and Harrison Zhu combined for 10 saves. 

UNE received some solid goaltending, with Joe Medel making six saves in the about 20 minutes and John Dusel stopping 19 shots over the final 40 minutes.

Ian Boldt had three ground balls and two caused turnovers for Colby, while Riley Burke and Kenny Jacobson each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Dan O'Gorman had two ground balls and one caused turnover for UNE (3-8).
