Men's lacrosse has five-game win streak end

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's lacrosse team's five-game winning streak came to an end after Bowdoin College opened up a big early lead and got a fine effort from its goaltender in a 10-6 win over the Mules on Wednesday night.

The Mules fall to 7-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Colby, ranked fourth in New England, will play host to Middlebury College this Saturday at 1 p.m. Bowdoin (10-3 overall, 6-3 NESCAC) is ranked 16th nationally and second in New England.

Bowdoin keeper Chris Williamson made 20 saves, with four or more saves in all four quarters. Colby had a 35-32 shot advantage in the contest and fired 22 shots in the second half.

The Polar Bears scored in the final minute of the opening three quarters of play. Mark Flibotte (4 goals, 1 assist) and Billy Bergner (2 goals, 3 assists) both had five points.

The game was fairly tight in the first quarter. After the Polar Bears scored first, Colby's Ian Deveau tied the game at 1-1 with 9:18 left in the first quarter. Flibotte made it 2-1 with 3:58 remaining and the Polar Bears went up 3-1 at the quarter break when Conor O'Toole scored his second goal of the contest with just four seconds to play.

Bowdoin scored all three of the goals in the second quarter to go up 6-1 at halftime. The Polar Bears added a sixth straight goal to go up 7-1 about five minutes into the third quarter.

Deveau scored two straight goals in a span of 54 seconds to bring the score to 7-3, but Flibotte tallied with 2:22 to play for an 8-3 margin. The Mules had an extra-man opportunity shortly after the Bowdoin goal, but did not score and then gave up a goal with just 48 seconds left in the quarter.

The game stayed 9-3 until John Jennings scored with 6:17 to play on the second assist of the night from Greg McKillop. Trevor Shorb tallied off a pass from Jonathan McIvor with 1:49 to play to make it 9-5. Flibotte scored his fourth goal just 28 seconds later to clinch the victory. Colby's Scott Margolis closed out the scoring with 1:02 to play.

Nick Hunnewell and Buddy Reed both had three caused turnovers for Colby. Peter Willauer chipped in with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, Russ Wilson had two caused turnovers, Ian Boldt scooped three ground balls, and Bjorn Knutson had nine ground balls.
