WATERVILLE, Maine ---- The Colby College men's lacrosse team moved to 22-3 at Bill Alfond Field over the past four years after the Mules exploded for five goals in the opening quarter in an 11-5 win over 15th-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday.
The Mules are 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while Wesleyan falls to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Colby's lone three defeats at Bill Alfond Field have come in one-goal losses in NESCAC play. The Mules go after another home win on Sunday when 19th-ranked Trinity College visits at 1 p.m. The Bantams took a 7-4 win at Bowdoin College on Saturday.
Wesleyan was allowing just 4.35 goals per game heading into Saturday, but the Mules scored five goals in just 15 minutes to take a 5-1 lead at the break.
Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.), who had two goals and three assists on the day, scored just 49 seconds into the game off a feed from Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.). However, Wesleyan tied the game at 1-1 with 8:40 to play on an unassisted score by John Froats (Yorktown, N.Y.).
Jonathan McIvor (Sudbury, Mass.) put the Mules ahead for good when he scored with 7:39 remaining on another assist by McKillop, who also had two goals and three assists on the day.
Colby defender Peter Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate assist when he found McKillop wide open in front for a 3-1 Mule lead with 4:58 left. McKillop, who played a part in all five Colby goals in the first period, had his 10th assist of the season on McIvor's second goal with 1:38 to play. The Mules scored their fifth goal of the period with just 1.2 seconds left when McKillop tallied on an off-balance shot from a Deveau feed.
Wesleyan changed goalies after the first quarter and scored just two minutes into the second quarter when Max Landow (Brookville, N.Y.) converted a pass from Teddy Citrin (New Canaan, Conn.). The Mules' defense, though, did not give up another goal the rest of the half as Colby took a 6-2 at intermission. John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.), who often saw a double team when he had the ball, drew two defenders and found McIvor open for the Mules' sixth goal.
The Cardinals came out fired up after halftime and immediately cut into Colby's lead with two unassisted goals in a span of seven seconds. Landow scored his second goal of the game with 7:18 to play. The Cardinals' Brett Cabriele (Yorktown, N.Y.) won the face-off and scored just seven seconds later to suddenly make it a 6-4 contest.
Scott Margolis (New York, N.Y.) scored arguably the most important goal of the game for Colby with 2:42 left on a man-up tally. Deveau picked up the assist on the play as the Mules regained the all-important momentum. Deveau put his team back up by four goals with another late goal with 36 seconds left in the third off a pass from Trevor Shorb (Lincoln, Mass.).
Jennings made it a 9-4 game when he took a pass from Shorb, and with defenders on him, got off a quick shot with 13:10 to play. The Mules took some time off the clock and were helped when Wesleyan had two penalties.
The Cardinals cut the margin to 9-5 when Froats tallied for the second time off a pass from DJ Bernatavitz (Orlando, Fla.) with 5:10 left. Margolis scored again with 4:22 remaining from Deveau to give the Mules their 10th goal and first-year Derek Youngman (Cohasset, Mass.) had his first collegiate goal on a man-up with 2:08 left.
Colby goalie Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) was a huge factor in the game, stopping six of his 12 saves in the fourth quarter. Wesleyan's goalkeepers had just four saves on the day.
Mule face-off man Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington, Minn.) was 11-for-19 in face-offs and had four ground balls.
