WATERVILLE, Maine --- Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) had three goals and three assists as the Colby College men's lacrosse team kept winning on Bill Alfond Field with a 9-7 victory over 19th-ranked Trinity College on Sunday in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
The Mules, who took an 11-5 home win over 15th-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday, moved to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in league play. Trinity came into the game unbeaten in the league and in first place, but left at 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Colby improved to 23-3 at Bill Alfond Field over the past four years, with all three losses coming in one-goal games. The Mules are 4-0 overall at home and 3-0 in league play on their home field this season.
The Mules had a big first quarter (5-1 scoring advantage) against Wesleyan, but waited 15 minutes longer this time. After the Mules took a 3-2 lead after one quarter, Colby scored the first four goals of the second quarter in a span of 3 minutes, 46 seconds to take a 7-2 lead. Deveau had back-to-back goals on hard shots from close to the same spot on the field in a span of 54 seconds (9:55 and 9:01) for the first two goals. Deveau then assisted on two straight scores by John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) with 6:43 left and then the other goal just 34 seconds later.
Trinity's Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.) made the score 7-3 at the break with his 12th goal of the year off a pass from Chase Growney (Berwyn, Pa.) with 4:17 left on the man-up.
The third quarter started off slowly for both teams until Deveau scored the lone goal of the period with 5:20 to play off a pass from Jonathan McIvor (Sudbury, Mass.) on a man-up situation.
Colby's Trevor Shorb (Lincoln, Mass.) made it 9-3 off a pass from Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) with 12:57 left in the fourth quarter and the Mules seemed to be in command.
The Bantams, though, refused to give up and made the game interesting. Shaheen scored his third goal of the game with 11:29 to play for a 9-4 Mule margin. Trinity scored twice in a span of 42 seconds to completely take control of the momentum. Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) tallied at 7:46 from Drew Grombala (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Matthew Hauck (Ridgewood, Conn.) made it 9-6 with 7:04 left off a dish from Shaheen. Nogueras scored his 23rd goal of the season from Hauck with 4:42 remaining, but both teams were plagued by turnovers in the final four minutes.
Jennings finished with three goals, while McIvor capped off a fine weekend with two goals and two assists for the Mules. Shorb had one goal and one assist, and McKillop had two assists.
Shaheen had three goals and one assist to pace the Bantams. Hauck had one goal and two assists, Alex Bertles (Palm Beach, Fla.) had one goal, and Growney finished with two assists.
Colby face-off man Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington, Minn.) had a dominating game with 11 ground balls, three caused turnovers, and won 14 of the 20 face-offs. Colby first-year defender Peter Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) added five ground balls and one caused turnover.
Alex Gottsch led Trinity's defense with five ground balls and one caused turnover.
Colby goaltender Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) had eight saves, three ground balls, and one caused turnover. Trinity keeper Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) had 12 saves and also had three ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Mules will look for a fourth straight win on Wednesday with a 4 p.m non-conference game at University of Southern Maine. Trinity will play host to Middlebury College this Saturday at 2 p.m.
