WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- The Colby College men's soccer team won the statistical battle and did not allow a regular goal to Williams College, but the Ephs buried a penalty kick in the 15th minute of the game and then held on for a 1-0 win over the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday.

Colby drops to 6-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the league heading into Wednesday's 3 p.m. home game with rival Bates College in the final regular season game. The Mules are still in the hunt for a league playoff spot. Williams, ranked sixth in New England, moves to 7-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the conference.

Peter Christman was tripped and taken down on the right edge of the box in the 15th minute. Phil Vestergaard put the penalty kick into the right corner.

Williams played down a man for the final 37 minutes of the match after having a player sent off with a red card. The Mules held the Ephs to just one shot in the second half and had advantages in the game in shots (8-7) and corner kicks (7-6).

Ben Joslin had three saves in goal for the Mules.

Colby had substantial possession at the end of the half, pulling Finan off his line on several occasions on crosses and free kicks while earning several corner kicks. In the 51st minute, Zach Grady picked up a yellow card after a scuffle in the corner of the field and less than two minutes later picked up his second yellow after a slide tackle in midfield

The final seven minutes of the second half proved to be the most eventul of the game. A foul on the Ephs' Doug Weinrib on the top left of the 18 in the 84th minute gave Colby its most dangerous set of opportunities of the match. Andrew Meisel’s ensuing free kick deflected off a player in the box, but Finan was able to tip the ball off the crossbar. The rebound was volleyed by a Mule at the top right of the six, but Michael Madding was on the line to clear the ball.

Colby again threatened in the 86th minute, this time off a corner kick. Finan punched the original corner away, but the ball was served from the top right of the 18 back into the box, where Jonthan Sommer was waiting just above the six-yard box. Sommer fired on net, but Finan was there to stop the ball on the line.
