BRUNSWICK, Maine --- Junior forward Nick Aubin is making a habit out of scoring clutch goals for the Colby College men's soccer team and teammate Andrew Meisel is doing the job setting up scores for the Mules. Both players were at it again in a huge 2-0 road win at rival Bowdoin College on Saturday.
The Mules improve to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in league play, while Bowdoin slips to 4-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference. The victory could be a big benefit to Colby as the New England Small College Athletic Conference teams battle for playoff spots in the final four league games of the regular season.
Aubin continues to be Mr. Clutch for the Mules, scoring big goals in league games. He scored the game-winning goal against the Polar Bears at 79:40 and earlier this year had the golden goal in a 1-0 overtime win at Middlebury College. In 2010, Aubin had another overtime goal in a victory over Middlebury and had assists in two 1-0 wins during the season. Even in his first year at Colby he was scoring game-winning goals, with an overtime tally against Tufts University. Aubin now has 10 goals and seven assists for 27 career points.
Meanwhile, junior midfielder Meisel moved his career totals to five goals and 11 assists for 21 points with two worthy assists. He had a long pass across the field to Aubin, who collected himself and ripped a shot in the lower right corner of the net with just 10:20 left in the contest. Meisel then had the centering pass to Eric Barthold, who scored just inside the right post for an important insurance goal at 83:38.
Colby goalkeeper Ben Joslin stopped three shots to earn the shutout. Will Wise stopped four shots for the Polar Bears. Colby had a 12-8 shot advantage and an 8-4 corner kick margin.
The Mules will play local rival Thomas College for the Elm City Bowl at home on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
