PRINCETON, N.J. --- The Colby College men started College Squash Association Team Championship play with a 7-2 upset win over Amherst College in the opening round of the Summers Cup 'C" Division on Friday.

Colby, ranked 23rd nationally and seventh in the Summers Cup (teams ranked 17th to 24th in the country), had lost 5-4 to 18th-ranked Amherst back on January 22. The Mules move to the semifinal round and will take on 22nd-ranked Hamilton College at noon Saturday. The Mules took a 6-3 win over the Continentals earlier in the season in a neutral site match.

Colby's Harry Smith (Locust Valley, N.Y.) had a dominating win at the first position with a 3-0 victory (11-9, 11-6, 11-7) over Scott Desantis. William Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) went four games to win his 21st match of the season at the second spot.

The Mules won two important 3-2 matches on the night. Will Hochman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took a 13-11 win in the fifth game at the fifth position, while John Eder (West Hartford, Conn.) came back from a 2-1 games deficit in his match at eight.

Pete Gabranski (Haydenville, Mass.) had a decisive 3-0 win at the sixth spot for the Mules. Stephen Carroll (Penn Valley, Pa.) and Ben York (Philadelphia, Pa.) both had 3-1 wins in their matches for the Mules. York won a key 15-13 opening game in his match.
