MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- Jack Mauel tied a 15-year-old school record in the 50-yard butterfly and Vincent Galea and Paul Wennberg both had fourth-place finishes for Colby College on the first day of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Wesleyan University on Friday night.
Mauel had a time of 23.06 to finish in a tie for ninth place in the 'B' final (places 9 to 16) with Wesleyan's Erik Yan. The 23.06 would have finished fifth in the championship final. Mauel ties the Colby record with swimming great Geoff Herrick, who set his record in 1998 and holds all three butterfly records.
Wennberg was fourth in the 50 breaststroke in 26.53 and Galea had a second tie for Colby with a 21.16 in the 50 freestyle. Galea was deadlocked with Patrick McGinnis of Connecticut College.
Galea, Mauel, Ryan Bachur, and Wennberg took 10th place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.40). Andy Peterson, Wennberg, Mauel, and Bachur also took 11th in the 400 medley relay (3:33.03).
Ethan Johnson had a score of 222.90 for 15th place in 1-meter diving and Liam Connell took 16th with 183.80 points. Colin McLaughlin added a 16th in the 200 individual medley (1:59.28 prelim).
The Mules are 10th of 11 teams after the first of three days of competition with 194 points.
