MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- Vincent Galea set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle for Colby College and had one of four eighth-place finishes for the Mules during the second day of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Wesleyan University.
Galea had his record in the preliminary race with a clocking of 1:41.68 to beat the old mark of 1:41.99 by Sam Wampler in 2009. Galea finished with a 1:45.76 in the championship final to place eighth.
Paul Wennberg also took eighth place in the 100 breaststroke in 58.73 (58.40 prelim) for the Mules.
In relay racing, the Mules took eighth in both the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle. Andy Peterson, Wennberg, Jack Mauel, and Galea had a time of 1:35.40 in the 200 medley relay. Galea and Peterson joined forces with Ryan Bachur and Colin McLaughlin in the 800 freestyle (7:07.13).
Mauel added a 12th for Colby in the 100 butterfly (51.32) to help the Mules stay in 10th place and close in on eighth place heading into the final day of competition on Sunday. Colby has 372 points and is just one-half point behind Wesleyan (372.5) and 10 behind Hamilton (382) for eighth place.
