Kernan, Colin lead the way at Sugarloaf

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine --- Josh Kernan finished in sixth place in the giant slalom for the Colby College men’s alpine team and Emily Colin had another strong finish by taking seventh for the women at the Colby Ski Carnival/Eastern Championships on Sunday at Sugarloaf.

The giant slalom competition had been postponed on Saturday because of poor ski conditions, but the teams made the runs up on Sunday.

Kernan had runs of 54.51 and 54.62 for a total time of 1:49.13 as the men finished fourth overall with 87 points. The Mules were just one point away from third place.

Meanwhile, Colin ended up with runs of 56.49 and 57.38 for a 1:53.87 finish. Her 57.38 on the second run beat the time of winner Courtney Hammond (57.54) of Dartmouth College. Colin’s skiing helped the women’s team place sixth overall, just three points out of fifth place.

Brian Morgan had another strong day for the Colby men by placing 14th in 1:50.79. Sam Witherspoon took 16th in 1:51.26 and Vincent Lebrun-Fortin was 27th with a 1:54.76.

Dana Breakstone took 21st place for the Colby women in 1:56.70 and Lauren McGrath gave the Mules three skiers in the top 25 by placing 25th in 1:58.01.
