New winter sports assistant coaches named

WATERVILLE, Maine -– Erin Archard, Dana Doran, Zachary Gray, Ryan Kelly, Mike Kerner, and Kerry Leonard are new winter sport assistant coaches at Colby College for the 2007-08 seasons.

Archard will help out both the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Doran is a new men’s basketball assistant coach, Gray is the assistant for men’s and women’s swimming, and Kelly is the new assistant for men’s and women’s Nordic skiing. Kerner, already an assistant men’s and women’s crew coach at Colby, will help out with men’s basketball this winter. Leonard is an assistant for the women’s ice hockey program.

Archard, a Farmington, Maine, native graduated from Middlebury College in 2007 and was a volunteer assistant coach for the Colby men’s and women’s cross country teams this fall. She will be a distance coach for the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Archard, an All-American cross country runner in 2006, ran on three national-qualifying teams for Middlebury, including two national championship squads.

Doran, who had been the varsity basketball coach at Gardiner Area High School from 2003 to 2006, was a graduate assistant for head coach Jim Calhoun at the University of Connecticut for the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. The 1997 team went to the NIT Final Four and the 1998 squad played in the NCAA Tournament.

Doran played basketball at Lafayette College from 1992 to 1996 and was a captain his senior season. He made the Patriot League Academic Honor Team. Doran later got a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut.

Doran took over a Gardiner squad that had gone 19-89 over the previous six years. He led Gardiner to a 31-28 record in his three years and was named the Kennebec Journal Varsity Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in 2005. Gardiner’s 15 wins after the 2006 season were the most for the program since 1969.

Gray, a 2005 University of Maine graduate, swam for the Black Bears in freestyle events and was named Most Improved Swimmer in 2002. He placed in the America East Championships in three events (200, 500, and 1650 freestyle) a total of 10 times in his four years. Gray is the current vice president of the Maine Masters Swimming Association.

Kelly has been an assistant Nordic coach for Bow (N.H.) High School from 2004 to 2007. He also was the New Hampshire J2 boys (ages 14-15) coach in 2007 and an assistant in 2006. Kelly, a 2004 Clarkson University graduate, was a United States Collegiate Skiing and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Nordic champion in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Kerner, a University of Rhode Island graduate, is in his second year as an assistant with the Colby crews. He will help the men’s basketball program this winter with operational and administrative work. Kerner was an assistant crew coach for six years at Rhode Island before coming to Colby.

Leonard a 2007 graduate of Hamilton College, was the Continentals' team MVP and assistant captain during the 2006-07 season. Leonard had 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points last year and helped Hamilton make the NESCAC Final Four. She finished her career with 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in three seasons with the Continentals.

Leonard played one season of hockey at the University of Southern Maine in 2003-04 before leaving for Hamilton. She played for the North American Hockey Academy out of Stowe, Vt., during the 2002-04 academic year. Leonard also played field hockey at Hamilton and was the team offensive MVP in 2005 and 2006. She also played a year with the Southern Maine field hockey team and helped USM to an NCAA Sweet 16 spot.
