FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Greg Ladd pitched two shutout innings of scoreless relief and Nate Ellis drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as two first-years helped the Colby College baseball team to a 5-4 win over Luther College in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at the Gene Cusic Classic.
In the opener, Colby's Dom Morrill had four strikeouts and no walks in the 6-2 loss to Luther, which scored four times in the first inning and added a pair of runs in the sixth. Colby had lone runs in the first and third innings.
Brandon Nieuw had a two-out double in the eighth inning for Colby and Ellis followed with his big hit to help Colby start the season at 1-1 overall. Brendan Gallagher and Nieuw both had two hits in the second game for Colby.
Mark Collins started for the Mules and was solid for six innings. Ladd kept Luther off the scoreboard while the Mules scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game.
