WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –- John Lerner (Canton, Mass.) homered and Matt Moore pitched seven innings for the victory as the Colby College baseball team opened the season with a 10-8 win over Union College in the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday.

Moore (Winfield, Ill.) was the winner after pitching seven innings and allowing seven runs while the Dutchmen's Phil Kemp (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut on the hill. He went five innings and allowed six earned runs. Colby's Wil Hartigan worked the ninth inning for his first save after Abhi Chandel held Union scoreless in the eighth.

The Mules' Kenneth Kaufman (Lexington, Mass.), Lerner, and Ryan Colon (Ridgefield, Conn.) each drove in two runs while John LaMantia (Gates Mills, Ohio) finished with three hits.

Union opened the game scoring five runs in the first inning and still led 6-5 after three innings.

Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Colby rallied in when a two-out RBI double by Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.) brought in Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.) and Lerner to give the Mules a 9-8 lead.

Trailing 10-8 in the top of the ninth with two out and a runner on first, Union had a long hit toward left center but Colby's center fielder Chris Murdock (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) made a backhand catch at the warning track, preventing Union from tying the game and giving the Mules the win.

Colby will face Western Connecticut on Sunday in Winter Haven, Fla., in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
