WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --- Abhi Chandel struck out five and walked just one in five innings of work to earn the victory as the Colby College baseball team took an 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo College in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday in Florida.
Kalamazoo came back to take a 4-1 win over the Mules (3-2 overall) in the nightcap. In Monday's games, the Mules took a 7-6 win over Hamilton College and lost 6-5 to the Continentals in the opener of a doubleheader.
Chandel allowed just a first inning run and Mark Nelson finished the final two innings for the Mules. Brandon Nieuw had three hits, including an RBI single in the third inning to lead Colby's offense. Mike Mastrocola added a pair of hits, while Ryan Conlon drove in two runs with a single and Kenneth Kaufmann had an RBI double in a four-run second inning.
Nathanael Sugarbaker and Mark Collins combined to allow just five hits in the second game, but Kalamazoo used a three-run second inning to take the game. Richard Newton had an RBI triple among his two hits.
In the win against Hamilton, Colby scored all seven runs in the first three innings and then held on for the victory. The Continentals scored twice in the first only to see Colby tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Colby answered with three more runs in the second inning and two more in the third. Hamilton managed three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Mules held on over the final two innings.
In the opener against the Continentals, it was the Mules who darted out to a 4-0 lead after scoring two in the second inning and two more in the third. Hamilton rallied with four runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game and then won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
