GORHAM, Maine --- Richard Newton had his 100th career hit and Nikolas Atsalis had a big offensive day for the Colby College baseball team, but the Mules' comeback came up just short in an 11-10 loss at University of Southern Maine on Thursday in non-conference play.
Newton had one hit and scored twice to reach 100 hits, while Atsalis had two hits, drove in two runs, and scored three times.
Colby fell to 10-11 overall and will play host to Tufts University in a NESCAC game Friday at 4 p.m. at Coombs Field. Southern Maine improved to 12-10 on the season.
John Lerner added a pair of runs and had an RBI single in the seventh inning for Colby. Robb Arndt finished with one hit, one run, and one RBI. Mike Mastrocola, Taro Gold, and Arndt all had doubles for the Mules.
Southern Maine had a 15-7 hitting advantage in the game, but the Huskies hurt their own cause with six errors.
The Mules were trailing 11-4 after six innings only to jump right back into things with four runs in the seventh inning. Colby had two runs in the ninth inning and had two men on base when the game ended.
Dakota Rabbitt pitched 2.1 innings and did not allow a run for Colby to keep his team in the game in the late innings. He has not allowed an earned run this season in five appearances and 11.2 innings of relief work.
