BRUNSWICK, Maine --- You might have to go back more than a decade to find a better day for the Colby College baseball program after the Mules received fine pitching performances from Matt Moore and Nathanael Sugarbaker in a doubleheader sweep of Bowdoin College on Sunday.
The Mules took a 2-1 win in the first game as Moore won a pitchers' duel with Polar Bear Oliver Van Zant, who came into the game with a 5-0 record in five starts. Sugarbaker worked seven of the nine innings in the nightcap in earning his first collegiate victory. Wil Hartigan pitched the seventh inning in the opener to earn his fifth save of the year and also pitched the final two innings in the second contest.
Colby (11-10 overall, 2-7 NESCAC East) won the two games over a good Bowdoin team. The Polar Bears have already won 20 games and had taken two of three from defending NESCAC champion Trinity College earlier this year. Colby had not won a NESCAC game over Bowdoin since 2002.
The lone Bowdoin run in the opener came in the third, when Dan Findley fisted a single to center that plated Joe Comizio. Colby rebounded by scraping together two runs in the fifth to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Ryan Conlon delivered a one-run single before Van Zant hit Mike Mastrocola with a pitch to score another run. Hartigan slammed the door for Colby in the seventh to earn the save.
Moore allowed seven hits, struck out one, and walked four in his six innings of work. Van Zant no-hit the Mules for four innings, but walked six batters in addition to three hits.
The Mules poured it on in game two, taking advantage of five Bowdoin errors. The Mules scored three runs in the fourth inning, and added another in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Bowdoin was able to get one back in the seventh, but Colby added five unearned runs in the eighth and ninth to seal the win. Nikolas Atsalis and Kenneth Kaufman had two hits apiece for the Mules, while Richard Newton reached base three times and scored three runs for Colby. Brendan Gallagher finished with a pair of runs, a hit, and an RBI.
Sugarbaker spun a gem for Colby, allowing no earned runs and just three hits over seven innings, striking out eight. Steve Hall allowed three runs in four innings while striking out seven for the Polar Bears in the loss.
