WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Dom Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) and Bowdoin College's Oliver Van Zant (Westport, Conn.) put on a pitchers' duel Saturday as the Polar Bears pulled out a 3-0 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday at Coombs Field.
The teams started at 9 a.m. to beat the rain and get in at least one of the two scheduled games. Van Zant and Morrill helped that cause by getting a number of 1-2-3 innings. The second game was postponed and no make-up has been announced.
Van Zant had 10 strikeouts in six innings of work before giving way to Ian Edwards (Bangor, Maine), who struck out the side in the seventh inning for the save. Meanwhile, Morrill pitched a complete game and allowed just two earned runs.
The Polar Bears (19-7 overall, 7-1 NESCAC) scored one run in the fifth when Joe Comizio (Vienna, Va.) was hit by a pitch while leading off. Dan Hicks (New York, N.Y.) had a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error put Comizio all the way to third base. Adam Marquit (New York, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the run.
Bowdoin used consecutive singles by Marquit, Kyle LeBlanc (Newburyport, Mass.), and Matt Ruane (Belmont, Mass.) to score one run. After a walk to Jordan Edgett (Lynn, Mass.) to load the bases, Brendan Garner (Swampscott, Mass.) brought in Ruane with an RBI single.
Colby fell to 10-17 overall and 0-8 in league play.
