WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College baseball team made it three shutouts in three games against University of Maine at Presque Isle with 16-0 and 13-0 victories in a doubleheader on Saturday at Coombs Field.
The Mules (7-5 overall), who took a 13-0 win over the Owls on Friday, allowed just nine hits in the three games. Dominick Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) pitched five innings for the victory in the opener, while Connor Sullivan earned the victory in the second game in a contest where Colby used five pitchers.
The Mules exploded for six runs in the first inning of the opener. Colby had five hits in the inning and were helped out by three Owl errors. The Mules had a lone run in the third inning, three more in the fourth, and then had another six-run inning in the sixth.
Colby's Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.) was on base all five times in the first game with four hits and one walk, John LaMantia (Gates Mills, Ohio) had a big game with a triple and a pair of doubles, and Devlin McConnell (Merion Station, Pa.) blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Nikolas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.) finished with two hits, two RBI, and one walk. John Schroeder (Glencoe, Ill.) drove in three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.
Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, Maine) had a single and a walk for UMPI in the first game.
Colby scored 11 runs in the first four innings of the nightcap, including a five-run second inning. Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Mule offense. Will Greenberg (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Taro Gold (Belmont, Mass.) each had three hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, Conn.) had three hits and one RBI. Jake Kramer (Medfield, Mass.) added two hits.
Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) was on base twice for UMPI with a single and reaching by a Colby error.
