LEWISTON, Maine --- John LaMantia continued to hit at a torrid pace and Colin Riggs had four hits as the Colby College baseball team reached 17 wins on the season with a 15-8 victory over Bates College in a game that did not count toward the league standings on Wednesday.
Colby, which won just seven games a year ago, is 17-13 heading into Thursday's 3:30 p.m. home game with Maine-Presque Isle. The game was just added to the schedule on Wednesday. The Mules close out the season by hosting Bowdoin College at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
LaMantia had three more hits Wednesday to take over the team lead in batting at .438. In the past 11 games since April 16, LaMantia is hitting .585 (24-for-41). He also had three runs scored and three RBI.
Riggs drove in four runs and scored twice, while Ryan Conlon added one hit, two runs, and two RBI. The Mules also got three runs and one hit from Ken Kaufman and Richard Newton had three RBI.
Colby trailed 4-0 after two innings, but the Mules scored eight times in the third inning to take the lead for good. Newton smacked a two-run double and LaMantia had a two-run single. Riggs, Conlon, and Nick Spillane all had RBI singles in the inning.
Matt Moore entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched 3.1 innings to earn his third victory of the season. He allowed no earned runs, struck out three, and walked none.
Bates fell to 10-20 on the season.
