WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College baseball team is on a three-game winning streak after scoring three times in the fifth inning and then hanging on for a 5-3 victory over Bates College on Thursday at Coombs Field.
Colby improves to 8-22, while Bates falls to 12-20.
Matt Moore worked into the eighth inning for Colby to earn his third victory of the season. Wil Hartigan closed the game down to notch his third save of the year.
Bates and Colby traded runs in the first inning. The Bobcats’ Tom Beaton singled to lead off the game and then stole second base. He scored the opening run of the contest on an unearned run against Moore after a Colby error.
John Lerner doubled and later scored on a wild pitch for the Mules in the first inning.
Ryan Conlon had a leadoff double for the Mules in a three-run fifth inning. Richard Newton singled and Brendan Gallagher followed with a two-run triple to give Colby the lead for good. Gallagher then came across to score on an RBI single by Lerner.
Robb Arndt led off the seventh inning with a walk for Colby and later scored on a double by Craig Cooper.
Bates added lone runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Dave Farrell walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Tyler Maxwell. After a single and a walk, Noah Burke had an RBI groundout to make to 5-2 after seven innings. Lynd doubled to lead off the ninth and later scored on an RBI double by Alex Gallant.
Gallagher had an a pair of hits and two RBI for Colby. Lerner and Ryan Conlon also had two hits apiece for the Mules.
Lynd had two hits and a walk for Bates.
