LEWISTON, Maine – The Colby College baseball team put up 20 runs in three games against Bates College, but the Mules had to settle for an 0-3 record after falling 10-8 in seven innings and losing the nine-inning game by a 4-2 count in a doubleheader Saturday.

Bates (18-14, 5-7 NESCAC East) has won seven straight, while is 11-20 overall and 0-11 in the conference.

Griff Tewksbury went 3-for-3 in Game 2, including a triple and a towering solo home run, his second homer in as many days and third of the season.

Noah Lynd was another big contributor for the Bobcats. He belted a two-run home run to left field in Game 1, then earned his second save of the season by pitching shutout eighth and ninth innings in Game 2.

Bates junior Karl Alexander (4-3) earned the win in Game 2 with seven strong innings before handing off to Lynd. Alexander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out five Mules.

The Bobcats may have wondered if they were in for a laugher to start the day, as they scored five runs in the first inning on four hits, including an RBI single by Lynd and a two-run double by Gordy Webb. But the Mules struck right back with five in the top of the second. Mike Mastrocola led the inning off with a solo homer, and John Schroeder and Nathan Ellis followed with singles to set up an RBI base hit by Richard Newton and a three-run home run to left field by Nikolas Atsalis, his second of the season, which quickly tied the game up at 5-5.

That set the tone for the rest of a roller-coaster Game 1. Colby went up 6-5 in the third on a double by Mastrocola followed by a Schroeder single, but Bates struck back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead at 8-6, with Lynd's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly by Velotta. The Mules scored once in the fourth, with singles by Atsalis, Colin Cummings and Taro Gold, then added another run in the fifth to tie the game again at 8-8. Mastrocola scored that run, too, leading off with a single off of rookie Dean Bonneau and getting bunted to second base by Schroeder, singled to third by Ellis and driven home on Brandon Nieuw's groundout.

Bates went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Ciummei, then a single by Jake Simon to plate Ciummei.

Mike Antonellis shut out the Mules over the sixth and seventh innings to earn his second save. Bonneau pitched the fifth inning and earned the victory to move to 3-1. Colby starter Connor Sullivan dropped to 3-3.

Game 2 began with more scoring, as both teams traded runs in the first inning. Newton led off the game with a single off of Alexander, and eventually scored on two Bates errors. The Bobcats evened the score with a one-out double by Tewksbury, followed by Lynd's RBI single.

Bates got all the runs it would need in the third. Tewksbury led off the inning with a triple, and scored easily on Chris Burke's sacrifice fly. Lynd was then hit by a pitch, moved to third on a hit by Webb, and scored on a groundout by Ciummei to make it 3-1.

Tewksbury led off the fifth with his home run off of Colby starter Dakota Rabbitt (2-2) for a 4-1 advantage. Abhi Chandel pitched three shutout innings of relief for the Mules.

Alexander worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Mules scoreless in the sixth inning, but Colby cut one run into Bates' lead in the seventh, when Atsalis walked, moved to third on Jake Kramer's single and scored on Robb Arndt's sac fly. But Lynd quieted Colby's bats over the final two innings to preserve the sweep.
