WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College baseball team rode 14 hits to 14 runs in a 14-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference play Wednesday.
The Mules (9-5 overall) made it six wins in a row behind a seven-run second inning and strong pitching from starter Connor Sullivan. On the offensive side, Colby spread out the wealth as 10 players notched at least one hit. Mike Mastrocola, John LaMantia, Chris Murdock, and John Schroeder all had two hits apiece.
"The team has solid confidence at this point after stringing a few wins together," Colby head coach Dale Plummer said. "They put in a great off-season and preseason and the benefits are coming through strong now. The best thing about this win tonight is that everybody is chipping in, everybody is contributing."
Sullivan started the game on the mound and recorded three innings of one-hit ball. Abhi Chandel, Charles Davis, and Mark Nelson all pitched in to hold UMF to one unearned run over the final four innings.
Mastrocola's double in the first inning knocked in Richard Newton and put the Mules up for good. Eleven Colby batters came to the plate in the bottom of the second, producing seven runs off five hits, a walk, and two errors. The game was scheduled to go nine innings, but was called after the top of the seventh due to darkness.
Steve Hutchinson had a double for Maine-Farmington (0-10).
Colby travels to Medford, Mass., on Friday for the first game of a three-game series against the Jumbos of Tufts University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
