WATERVILLE, Maine --- Connor Sullivan (Hamilton, Mass.) earned his team-high third win of the season and the Colby College baseball team used three doubles in the first inning to score three runs on the way to a 5-3 non-conference win over St. Joseph's College on Friday at Coombs Field.
Sullivan moved to 3-1 on the season while working into the seventh inning. He helped the Mules improve to 8-10 overall, while dropping the Monks to 11-8.
Hot-hitting Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.), who entered the game batting .459, opened the Colby first with a double and moved to third on an error. After a walk by Nate Ellis (Milton, Mass.), Newton and Ellis did a double steal to make it 1-0. With two outs in the inning, Brendan Gallagher smacked an RBI double to bring home Ellis and then Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine) followed with another double to drive in Gallagher for a 3-0 lead.
St. Joseph's scored its first run in the top of the sixth inning after Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, Maine) led off with a single. He later scored on a single by Alex Markakis (Lynnfield, Mass.).
Devin McConnell (Merion Station, Pa.) led off the home half of the sixth inning with single, moved to second when Gallagher was hit by a pitch, took third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI single by Arndt.
The Monks put the first two runners on base in the seventh inning when Markakis singled and Dan Brown (Portland, Maine) followed with a double. Jimmy Rouse had an RBI groundout to bring in Markakis with St. Joseph's second run and Nate Martin (Chebeague Island, Maine) singled to drive in Brown.
Colby's Mike Mastrocola scored the final run of the game after leading off with a double in the eighth inning. He took third on a sacrifice bunt by Gallagher and then scored on a suicide squeeze by Arndt.
Arndt finished with three hits and three RBI to lead Colby's offense. Newton added two hits and a walk, while Gallagher had the double, was hit by a pitch, and added the sacrifice bunt.
Brown led the Monks' attack with two hits and was hit by a pitch, while Kenneborus was also hit by a pitch and had a pair of hits.
