WATERVILLE, Maine --- Dom Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) pitched seven strong innings to earn the win in his final collegiate game and reliever Abhi Chandel (Columbus, N.J.) did not allow a hit in the final two innings to pick up the save as the Colby College baseball team ended the season with a 5-4 victory over playoff-bound Bowdoin College on Friday at Coombs Field.

The Mules end the season at 14-20 overall and 1-11 in the NESCAC East, while Bowdoin falls to 20-12 overall and 8-4 in league play. The Polar Bears will play in the NESCAC playoffs next Friday to Sunday (May 13-15) at American International College (Amherst College hosting).

After Bowdoin took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, Colby went up against three pitchers in the bottom of the frame. Polar Bear starter Oliver Van Zant (Westport, Conn.) hit Nikolas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.) to lead off the seventh and was relieved by Evan Farley (Hampden, Maine). Nate Ellis (Milton, Mass.) greeted him with a single and then Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.) sacrificed the runners over to second and third.  Atsalis scored on an RBI groundout by Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine) and Ellis came in with the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch. Jay Loughlin entered the game for Bowdoin and was able to retire the next batter.

The Polar Bears scored the first run of the game after Matt Ruane (Belmont, Mass.) singled to start the second inning and then stole second base. After an out, Joe Comizio (Vienna, Va.) smacked an RBI double.

The Mules went up 3-1 with three runs in the third. Taro Gold (Belmont, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a walk to Brandon NIeuw (Port Chester, N.Y.). Both runners moved up on a groundout and that brought up Ellis, who had a two-run double to give Colby the lead. Gallagher followed with an RBI single to bring in Ellis.

Bowdoin cut the lead to one run with a lone score in the fourth inning. Brett Gorman (Bedford, N.Y.) led off with a double and later scored on a Colby error.

The Polar Bears took the lead in the seventh inning when Adam Marquit (New York, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with one out. The Mules were able to get the second out of the inning on a fly to right field, but John Lefeber (Branford, Conn.) ripped a two-run homer run for a 4-3 Polar Bear lead.

Morrill had his best outing of the season, striking out seven and walking none. Chandel allowed just one walk to start the eighth inning, but quickly got the runner out on a fielder's choice.

Van Zant had six strikeouts in six-plus innings of work for the Polar Bears.

Ellis had the big two-run double, a single, a walk, and scored twice for the Mules. Schroeder added a pair of hits, while Gallagher had one hit, a walk, and a sacrifice.
