WATERVILLE, Maine --- Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.) went deep for Colby College and the Mules had 11 hits, but Southern Maine scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out an 11-7 win in non-conference play Wednesday at Coombs Field.
Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine) had a two-run double and Mike Eaton (Sabbatus, Maine) ripped a two-run single in the ninth for the Huskies.
Southern Maine improves to 12-9 overall and the Mules fall to 9-9.
A hit batter, an error, and a bunt single loaded up the bases in the top of the ninth for the Huskies. Eaton followed with a two-run single to put USM up for good at 8-7. After the Mules recorded two outs, Grady smacked his double to drive in two more runs. USM scored the final run of the inning on a Colby error.
The Mules led 2-0 after three innings, 4-2 after four, and took the 7-6 lead into the ninth.
Eaton finished with three hits, a walk, and two RBI on the day. John Carey (South Portland, Maine) added two hits and two runs, while Grady also scored two runs to go along with his big double in the ninth.
Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.) had three hits, a walk, and three runs to lead Colby. Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.) also had three hits and scored a run, Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.) smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning, and Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.) walked twice and had one hit.
Grey Goodrich (Amesbury, Mass.) entered the game in the seventh inning and earned the win in relief. Dustin Stanton (Cornish, Maine) had a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the USM save.
