LEWISTON, Maine --- The Colby College baseball team tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the eighth inning only to see Bates College score twice in the bottom of the eighth on the way to a 3-1 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference East play Friday.
Colby (11-11 overall, 2-8 NESCAC East) and Bates (17-8, 3-4) will play two games in Waterville on Saturday starting at noon.
Paul Chiampa of Bates and the Mules' Dominick Morrill both had fine outings. Chiampa pitched eight innings while allowing four hits, striking out eight, and walking none. Morrill allowed just three hits while working into the eighth inning and struck out three and walked four.
The Bobcats scored a lone run in the second inning when Rich Velotta had an RBI groundout to bring in Jake Simon.
The Mules tied the game in the eighth when Nick Ruocco led off with a single and John Lerner entered the game as a pinch-runner. Brandon Nieuw had a sacrifice bunt to get Lerner to second base and Richard Newton singled to bring him home for a 1-1 game.
After a leadoff single by Bates' Noah Burke and a walk to Noah Lynd, Wil Hartigan came in for Morrill. Gordy Webb greeted him with a two-run double for the game-winning runs.
Ruocco finished with two of Colby's four hits. Newton and Ryan Conlon had the other hits for the Mules.
