WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College goalkeeper Liza Benson (Lawrence Academy/Orchid, Fla.) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending September 10.

Benson stopped nine shots, including three in overtime, to help the Mules to a 0-0 season-opening tie at third-ranked Tufts University on Saturday. Benson also posted a 2-0 shutout of Tufts to start the 2005 season and has allowed just two goals in the last three games against the Jumbos, who were an NCAA Division III Final Four team last year.

Benson, a NESCAC first team all-conference selection last year, leads the league in saves per game (9.0) and is tied for goals against average (0.00) and save percentage (1.000). She was second a year ago in the conference in goals against average (0.87), save percentage (.872) and saves per game (6.33). Benson had seven shutouts during the 2005 season when the Mules finished 7-3-5.

Colby (0-0-1) will have its home opener this Wednesday at 4 p.m. against University of Maine at Farmington. The Mules then play another NESCAC game Saturday at home at 1:30 p.m. against Bowdoin College.
