WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College senior defensive back Mike Bracco (St. Thomas Aquinas/North Hampton, N.H.) was named to the Football Gazette NCAA Division III Preseason All-America Team on Monday.

Bracco was one of five defensive backs selected to the third team on defense. He is the only New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) player to make one of the three teams on offense or defense.

Bracco helped Colby finish 7-1 last season by leading the Mules in total tackles (67), solo tackles (45) and interceptions (4). He also was tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (2) and had one fumble recovery. Bracco had 69 return yards with his four interceptions.

In a tight game with Middlebury College, Bracco returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown with five minutes left in the third quarter to give Colby a 14-0 lead on the way to a 20-7 win. He had two interceptions in the victory over Middlebury and added lone picks against Wesleyan University and Tufts University. Bracco had a season high 13 tackles in Colby's 24-17 win against rival Bates College.

Besides his work on defense, Bracco returned seven kickoffs for a 22.6-yard average and brought back 13 punts for a 5.0-yard average.

Bracco, who will be playing his third year of football with the Mules after transferring to Colby, also had 31 tackles and one interception when the team finished 6-2 in 2004.

Colby opens the 2006 season at Trinity College on Saturday, September 23 at 1 p.m. Trinity has the nation's longest winning streak at 30 games. The Mules' home opener is September 30 against Middlebury at 1 p.m.
