Prisby leads Mules to Maine title

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Karen Prisby won her second straight individual women's title and the Colby College women's cross country team won the Maine State Cross Country Championships for the third straight year in Saturday's races at Bowdoin College.

The Colby men placed third overall and Dan Vassallo was second for the Mules.

Prisby won last year's race at Colby and clocked a time of 18:17.00 over the five-kilometer course to win the title again this season. Michelle Severance is the only three-time winner of the race for Colby after earning titles in 1990, 1991 and 1993. Prisby joins Kara Patterson (1994, 1996) as a two-time winner for the Mules.

Anna King was three seconds behind Prisby in taking second place in 18:20.00 for Colby, which had a team score (9 teams) of 21 to win the team title for the eighth time overall and for the sixth time in the last nine years under head coach Deb Aitken.

Liz Petit had a personal best time of 18:57.00 in taking fifth for Colby. Kathleen Maynard was sixth in 18:58.00, Devan FitzPatrick took seventh with a 19:06.00 and Amanda Ivey was ninth in 19:21.0.

On the men's side, Bowdoin won the team title with a score of 33. Bates had 56 to barely edge out Colby's score of 59 in the 10-team field.

Steve Monsulick of Bates won the race in 25:33.08 and Vassallo took second for Colby with a 25:42.72. John Swain was ninth for the Mules in 26:15.78 and Jeff Alden placed 11th with a 26:22.75.
