Colby women's cross country second at UMass-Dartmouth Invite; men take eighth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.  --  The Colby College women's cross country team placed second and the men took eighth place at the season-opening University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.

Colby's Anna King placed fourth out of 227 finishers in 18 minutes, 33 seconds over the 5-kilometer course. All-American Karen Prisby was just behind King in fifth place with a 18:36 clocking. First-year runner Amanda Ivey placed a strong 13th in 19:04, Devan FitzPatrick was 20th in 19:16, Kathleen Maynard took 24th with a 19:24 and Kirsten Davis was 38th in 19:44.

Colby was the defending champion in the meet, but had to settle for second place behind Amherst College this year. The Lord Jeffs had four runners in the top 10 and had a score of 32, while the Mules finished with a 65. Tufts was a distant third with a 119.

The Colby men had a score of 189, nearly 50 points better than last year's ninth place finish. Dan Vassallo was eighth among collegiate runners and 11th overall (there were some unattached runners in the field) with a time of 25:51 over five miles. John Swain took 27th place in 26:40, Jeff Alden was 29th in 26:44 and Alex Gill was 58th with a 27:31.

Colby's cross country teams will entertain Bowdoin College in a dual meet next Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
