AMHERST, Mass. --- The Colby College football team led 3-0 after the first quarter and were moving the ball against unbeaten Amherst College, but the Lord Jeffs used a key special teams play and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second quarter to spark their team in a 30-3 win over the Mules in NESCAC play Saturday at Pratt Field.

Colby falls to 1-3 overall heading into next Saturday's noon home game with Hamilton College. Amherst (4-0) has won 12 straight games over the past two years.

David Bendit booted a collegiate-high 38-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the opening quarter for Colby. The Mules went 68 yards on 14 plays before the kick and had more than nine minutes of possession time in the first quarter.

The second quarter started with some promise for the Mules when the defense forced a punt at the Amherst 26-yard line. However, Lord Jeff punter Matt Rawson gave his squad a special teams boost with a 66-yard punt downed at the Mules' 8-yard line. The Mules were unable to move the ball and two penalties pushed Colby back to the 2-yard line for a punt.

Amherst ended up taking over after the Colby punt on the Mules' 30-yard line. Three plays later, Mike Samela rushed for a 21-yard touchdown to make the score 6-3 (extra point was missed).

The first of two costly turnovers by Colby pushed the Lord Jeff lead to 13-3. After Amherst intercepted a pass on Colby's 27-yard line, the Lord Jeffs made quick work when quarterback Alex Vetras hit Brian Murphy on the next play for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

Colby settled down and drove 41 yards on nine plays to reach Amherst's 12-yard line in the final minute of the first half. A touchdown and made extra point would cut the margin to 13-10 at the break. The Lord Jeffs, however, forced a fumble and Matt Pieterse scooped up the ball and raced 81 yards for a touchdown with just 11 seconds left in the half to give his team a 20-3 margin.

After a scoreless third quarter, Amherst added 10 points in the final quarter. The Lord Jeffs once again had a short field after recovering a fumble on the Colby 39-yard line. The Lord Jeffs used five plays as Vetras found Andrew Reed on a 15-yard scoring pass with 13:07 to play. Amherst added an 18-yard field goal from Rawson with 7:22 to play.

Connor Walsh had a fine day offensively for Colby with 69 yards of rushing and seven catches for 62 yards. Conor Tidgwell added 10 rushes for 46 yards.

Tom Duffy led Colby's defense with a game-high 11 tackles. Fellow linebackers Brian Melett (9 tackles) and Ryan Murphy (8) were other top tacklers.
