CLINTON, N.Y. --- Despite a solid day from the defense, the Colby College football team fell 20-0 to Hamilton College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at Steuben Field.
Colby's defense allowed just 82 rushing yards and 255 yards of total offense. The defense gave up 14 points (one touchdown was an interception return) and the two scoring drives were 46 yards after a Mule fumble and 40 yards after a good punt return.
Sam Handler led Colby's defense with three sacks among his seven tackles. Tom Daley also had seven tackles and Mark Ozarowski finished with six stops for the Mules (0-5).
Hamilton (2-3) took over on the Colby 46-yard line after a fumble and scored four plays later on a 25-yard scoring pass from Dan Hood to Joe Rinaldo. The Continentals did miss the extra point and led 6-0 at the first quarter break.
Hamilton got good field position after a 14-yard punt return brought the ball to Colby's 40-yard line in the second quarter. The Continentals again went four plays and scored on Mark Snickenberger's 9-yard scoring run for a 13-0 lead at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Hamilton (2-3) got its final points with 1:13 remaining when John Lawrence intercepted a pass and went 30 yards for the touchdown.
Chris Bashaw had 64 yards of rushing and Patrick Burns threw for 102 yards for Colby. Dan Prunier caught four passes for 36 yards.
Colby plays host to Bates College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
