LEWISTON, Maine --- Turnovers and a slow start to the game for the Colby College football team was all Bates College needed in posting a 31-21 victory over the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Garcelon Field. The Mules fall to 3-3 and will play at Tufts University next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Bates is 1-5 and now takes charge of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) series for this year. The Bobcats, a winner over Colby for the first time since 2002, can win the CBB title with a victory at Bowdoin College next Saturday. Colby, which had just nine turnovers in five games this season, committed 10 against the Bobcats. The Mules had seven turnovers in a row to start the game. The Mules’ defense performed admirably in the first half despite falling behind 28-0 at one point. One Bobcat touchdown came on a fumble recovery and two touchdowns came from Bates drive starts of 9 and 22 yards because of other Colby turnovers. Bates first-year quarterback Ryan Katon completed 13 of 23 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Sean Wirth, Evan Tierney and Matt Gregg. Colby, though, held Bates to 185 yards of total offense and 10 first downs despite the Bobcats' big advantage in time of possession, 36:20 to 23:40. Colby got on the scoreboard on the final play of the first half, a 1-yard plunge by Dan Prunier. The score came two plays after Carroll found Connor Walsh for a 38-yard reception that took the Mules to the Bates 2-yard line with under 15 seconds left. Katon was sacked by Sam Handler and fumbled on Bates' next play from scrimmage, and Alex Tisch fell on the ball at the Bates 10. Prunier ran the ball into the end zone on the next play, cutting the lead to 28-21 with 6:30 left in the third. Lamont Henry led the Colby defense with 10 tackles (eight solo), while Alex Halls had nine stops and two pass break-ups. John Murphy and Gardiner Parker both had six tackles and Sam Handler had a sack among his five stops. Richard Newton intercepted a pass for the Mules and Casey Sullivan recovered a fumble. Prunier had 25 rushes for 104 yards and the two touchdowns. Walsh caught three balls for 50 yards.
