Middlebury football pulls away from Colby

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- The Colby College football team had 320 total yards of offense and managed to stay in the game well into the third quarter, but Middlebury College scored 31 points in the final 18 minutes of the game to pull away for a 45-0 victory on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

The Panthers (1-1) had five scoring drives of 60 yards or more and scored their other touchdown on an interception return. Colby's offense moved the ball as well only to be hurt by four turnovers.

With the score 14-0, Middlebury added an insurance touchdown on a 6-yard scoring pass from Donald McKillop to Erik Rostad with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers then scored 24 points in the fourth quarter, including an interception return about a minute after Middlebury had gone ahead 28-0 on a 20-yard pass play from McKillop to Ryan Bohling.

Nick Kmetz threw for 195 yards and had 48 yards rushing for the Mules (0-2). Michael Cuqua finished with 49 yards on eight rushes (6.1 yards per rush). Spencer Merwin caught four balls for 61 yards, Matt Hellinger added five catches for 47 yards, and Patrick Burns caught three balls for 43 yards.

McKillop threw for 364 yards and three touchdowns before he left in the fourth quarter. James Millard was the favorite target on the day with 11 catches for 108 yards.

Chris Copeland led Colby's defense with 12 tackles, while Thomas Duffy added 10 tackles and one sack. Brian Mellett added nine stops and Lamont Henry made six tackles. Derrick Beasley made his first career interception and added five tackles for Colby.

The Mules had a 125-85 advantage in rushing over the Panthers and Colby managed 19 first downs (Middlebury had 27).

Colby will play at Wesleyan University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
