SOMERVILLE, Mass. --- The Colby College defense kept the Mules in the game, but Tufts University scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 17-10 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference football Saturday.

The Mules fall to 3-4 heading into next week’s season finale at home against Bowdoin College at 12:30 p.m. Colby has a 3-0 record at the new Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium. Tufts improved to 4-3 with the victory.

Chris Copeland led Colby’s defense with 13 tackles, a fumble recovery, and two pass break-ups. Gardiner Parker added 11 tackles, while John Murphy and Alex Halls both had eight tackles. Tom Daley finished with seven stops and Sam Handler had two sacks among his six tackles and forced two fumbles.

David Halas caught two touchdown passes for Tufts and Adam Auerbach booted a 34-yard field goal. After a scoreless first quarter, Halas caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Anthony Fucillo for a 7-0 Jumbo lead at halftime. Tufts went 64 yards on 13 plays in 5:57 on the drive.

Nick Kmetz got his first start at quarterback for Colby and picked up his first collegiate touchdown on a 10-yard scoring run with 6:47 left in the third quarter. The Mules only had to go 20 yards in three plays for the score after Alex Tisch forced a fumble that was recovered by Copeland at the Tufts 20.

The Jumbos went up for good at 10-7 when Auerbach booted his field goal on a drive that consisted of 11 plays and 65 yards with 10:11 to play in the fourth quarter.

Colby, which had no fumbles this week after having problems with holding on to the ball last week against Bates, did have two interceptions. Just three plays after the Jumbos’ field goal, Tufts intercepted a pass at Colby’s 40-yard line and returned it to the 33-yard line. After an incompletion and a timeout, the Jumbos went up top for 33 yards from Tom McManama to Halas with 9:03 left in the fourth quarter.

The Mules took 6:04 off the clock and went 69 yards in 18 plays to get a 22-yard field goal from Victor Gagne with 2:51 to play. Tufts recovered an on-side kick at the Colby 41-yard line, but the Mules did force a punt with 1:10 remaining and got the ball at their own 13-yard line. However, Tufts intercepted a pass two plays later to clinch the victory.

Colby’s defense held Tufts running back Will Forde to just 56 yards of rushing on 23 carries. Halas had seven catches for 101 yards and the two scores.

Kmetz had 14 completions for 117 yards for the Mules. Matt Hellinger caught five balls for 52 yards and Patrick Burns made four catches for 49 yards.

Colby punter Victor Gagne punted six times for a 41.5-yard average and had three punts inside the 20-yard line. The Tufts punter managed just a 31-yard average.
