WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College senior Justin Candon (Rutland/Rutland, Vt.) was named the Offensive Player of the Week and first-year player Michael Talarico (Taft School/Arlington, Mass.) earned Rookie of the Week honors for their football performances by the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Monday.
Candon caught nine passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mules to a 19-16 upset win over Tufts University, which came into the game tied for first in the NESCAC. Candon opened the scoring for Colby with a 16-yard touchdown reception and added a 9-yard scoring catch in the third quarter.
Candon is arguably the top wide receiver in the NESCAC over the past two weeks. He has caught 18 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns in wins against Bates and Tufts. During the two games, he has caught 56 percent of Colby's receiving yards and has accounted for 24 of Colby's 39 points.
Candon leads Colby with 36 catches for 390 yards this season and ranks in a tie for second in the league in receptions per game (5.14) and is sixth in receiving yards per game (55.7).
Talarico had a collegiate-high eight tackles, including one for a loss, and added a pass break-up. He had six solo stops from his linebacker spot and was third on Colby in tackles for the day. Talarico has 15 tackles and one fumble recovery this season.
Colby (2-5) will play at Bowdoin College this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the final game of the season.
