WATERVILLE, Maine --- Stefan Hrdina (W. Redding, Conn.) rushed for two touchdowns as the Middlebury College football team took a 23-0 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Seaverns Field.
Middlebury is 2-0, while Colby falls to 0-2.
Middlebury kicker/punter Steve Hauschka (Needham, Mass.) kept Colby in poor field position most of the day with a 43.1-yard punting average on eight kicks and four kicks inside the 20-yard line. He also kicked a field goal and had booming kickoffs, most of them into the end zone.
Hrdina rushed 27 times for 94 yards and quarterback Tiger Lyon (El Paso, Texas) had 84 yards passing and one touchdown.
Erik Woodring (Cos Cob, Conn.) had 14 tackles and Kevin Ryan (Shelton, Conn.) was in on four of Middlebury's eight sacks.
Hrdina scored on a 14-yard run off a four play, 31-yard drive to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead. Middlebury made it 14-0 at halftime when Lyon hit Jamie Staples (Pacific Grove, Calif.) on a 7-yard pass play with 3:56 remaining to the break.
Hauschka booted a 28-yard field goal with 7:16 left in the third quarter and then Hrdina added a late 1-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds left in the game.
Justin Smith (Rockland, Mass.) threw for 132 yards for Colby, while Brennan Moore (Fairfield, Conn.) had five catches for 53 yards. Sam Handler (Beverly Hills, Calif.) led the defense with eight tackles, including three for a loss.
Colby will host Wesleyan University next Saturday at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Middlebury will entertain Amherst College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
