MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- Colby College running back Chris Bashaw had 182 yards of total offense, but Wesleyan University got three short scoring runs from Shea Dwyer in taking a 23-14 win over the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference football on Saturday.
Dwyer started the scoring for Wesleyan (2-1) with a 3-yard scoring run with 4:30 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead after Colby (0-3) blocked the extra point try.
The Mules went nine plays and 80 yards to score on a 7-yard run by Bashaw with 5:21 left to halftime. The extra point by Victor Gagne gave the Mules their first lead of the game.
The Cardinals went ahead 12-7 at halftime when Dwyer scored from 2 yards out with 2:53 remaining, but the Cardinals tried a two-point conversion and failed.
Colby went ahead for the second and final time when Bashaw took a pass from first-year quarterback Patrick Burns and scampered 82 yards for his second score of the game. Gagne's second extra point made it 14-12 with 11:49 left in the third quarter.
The Cardinals got the game-winning points with 5:39 left in the third when Dwyer plunged in from 1 yard out to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive. The Cardinals added a 28-yard field goal with 2:17 left in the game to secure the victory.
Bashaw, Colby's captain, finished with 97 yards of rushing on 21 carries and added three catches for 85 yards. Burns, in his first collegiate start, went 10-for-19 and had 153 yards. Justin Candon caught four balls for 52 yards.
The Mules had 59 offensive plays and 303 yards of total offense, while Wesleyan had 315 yards on 79 plays.
Alex Halls and Denis Cronin each had nine tackles to lead Colby's defense. Greg Enos finished with eight stops, while John Murphy and Lamont Henry both had seven.
Colby plays host to Amherst College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
