WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College co-captain Meghan Saccone (Andover, Mass.) scored two goals and Courtney Erskine (Turner, Maine) had two assists to spark the Mules to a 4-1 non-conference victory over local rival Thomas College in field hockey Wednesday night at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules are at 5-5 heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. home game with Amherst College. Thomas falls to 3-9 overall.
The Terriers, who lost 7-0 to Colby last year, kept the game close this time. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime and Colby did not get the eventual game-winning goal until there was about 17 minutes left in the game.
Saccone got her first of the night on a shot that started off a penalty corner with 15:01 left in the opening half. Thomas, however, made it 1-1 at halftime when Sarah Estes (Brewer, Maine) tallied off an assist from Ali Kriegel (Winslow, Maine).
Caitlyn Lancaster (Cornville, Maine), who has missed much of the season with an injury, got her first goal of the season and the game-winning tally with 17:04 to play.
Saccone added an insurance goal with 12:28 to play off the first of two assists from Erskine. Saccone is up to three goals and four assists for 10 points, while Erskine has four goals and two assists for 10 points.
Erskine's second assist resulted in a goal by Sally Klose (McLean, Va.) with 10:59 to play in regulation.
Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham, Mass.) stopped three shots for Colby, while Megan Denby (Copiague, N.Y.) made four saves for the Terriers.
