WATERVILLE, Maine --- Ashley Pullen Willoughby and Colby College field hockey head coach Amy Bernatchez will not need time to get acquainted when the two coach together this fall.
Pullen Willoughby, a 2001 Messalonskee High School graduate and a 2005 graduate of Middlebury College, is the new assistant field hockey coach at Colby.
Pullen Willoughby was a player for Bernatchez at Messalonskee from 1997 to 2000. She was a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference (KVAC) all-league player in 1999 and 2000. She played in the East/West Senior All-Star Game in 2001.
"I've known Ashley since she was 13-years-old and it has been a great pleasure to watch her grow and mature into such a fine young woman," Bernatchez said. "She has a work ethic and determination that sets her apart from her peers. Ashley understands the challenges of being a collegiate student-athlete, is an excellent communicator, and will relate well with the young women on our team."
Pullen Willoughby went on to Middlebury and earned All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) second team honors in 2004. The Panthers won the NESCAC title in 2003 and she helped the team to back-to-back NCAA title games in 2003 and 2004. Pullen Willoughby also played in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association North/South Senior All-Star Game in 2004. Pullen had 10 goals and 21 assists for 41 career points as Middlebury went 57-14 in her four seasons.
Pullen Willoughby earned the A. Bayard Russ Memorial Athletic Award while at Middlebury. The honor is given to a student-athlete who excels in two sports or more. She also played squash during her time at Middlebury.
Pullen Willoughby will work with Colby's midfielders and concentrate on team building and team dynamics, according to Bernatchez.
After graduation from Middlebury, Pullen Willoughby earned her master's degree in education with a focus in school counseling from the University of Maine in May 2009. She has been a school counselor at Waterville Junior High since August 2008.
Pullen Willoughby worked with Bernatchez as a coach at the Central Maine Field Hockey Academy last July. She also has been an official since 2007 with the Maine Field Hockey Umpires Association.
