WATERVILLE, Maine --- Trinity College quarterback Eric McGrath threw for 297 of his 338 yards in the opening half as the Bantams opened the season with a 20-0 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference football Saturday at Seaverns Field.
McGrath was 20-for-40 and had three touchdown passes. He set the tone for the day with a 99-yard touchdown pass to Joe Clark with 11:01 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
The Bantams (1-0) went up 14-0 in the second quarter when McGrath hit tight end Andrew McDowell on a 19-yard scoring pass with 5:41 left to the break.
McDowell and McGrath hooked up again in the third quarter on a 13-yard scoring pass, but the extra point attempt was missed. McDowell caught five balls for 84 yards, while Clark had 107 yards on two catches.
The game was sloppy at times, with the two teams combining for 12 turnovers (five fumbles, seven interceptions).
Colby wide receiver Justin Candon had eight catches for 63 yards.
Trinity was led on defense by Tyler Berry, who had eight tackles (three for loss), one interception, and one sack. Greg Enos and Sam Handler both had nine tackles for the Mules (0-1).
